The British isles are full of stories about mysterious women who reside in lakes, the most famous of which is ‘The Lady of the Lake’ of Arthurian legend. This image however references a lesser known tale from a remote body of water high up in the Black Mountains of South Wales called Llyn y Fan Fach. The tale {the Welsh Fairy Book} describes a young man who spies a beautiful woman in the lake and after repeated attempts he manages to woo her to him with half baked bread. The mysterious beauty agrees to be his wife, but puts one caveat on the marriage "I will wed you, and I will live with you until I receive from you three blows without a cause - {tri ergyd diachos}. When you strike me the third causeless blow I will leave you for ever." Her mysterious father appears and grants his blessings, along with a rich dowry of livestock.
Despite the fact that his lake lady is a bit odd and doesn’t quite fit in with the customs of the local townsfolk, they live happily together for many years, having three sons together. Eventually, through a variety of circumstances he uses up all his ‘cause-less blows’ {mostly through a variety of playful flicks and slaps, none intended to cause harm}. When he carelessly inflicts the third and final blow, she sticks to her word, and returns to the waters, taking with her not only the rich dowry of animals, but his sons too, leaving him lonely and destitute.
