This image is inspired by Arthur Machen’s intriguing tale, “The White People” {as in Fae folk, not Caucasian lol}
In the story, Lady Avalon is the daughter of a great Lord. She is beautiful and kind, and is loved by all, so loved in fact that she had five suitors all vying for her hand. The Lady however did not wish to marry, but this enraged her father, although he was very fond of his daughter, so when she begged her father that if he only gave her a year to make up her mind and that she would pick one to marry once the year was up, he agreed and sent word of her terms to her suitors, telling them they would have an answer at the year’s end. One of the men, Sir Simon, was suspicious of her however, and dressed in the guise of a maid, infiltrated her home to spy upon her.

The things he saw shocked him to his core, for you see Lady Avalon was a very clever creature and had the knowledge of secret things. She knew how to turn a wax doll of a man into a human lover to fill her bed at night, she knew how to call the serpents from the woods, to do her bidding, and she knew darker things still…

At one point Sir Simon was discovered by the lady’s maidservant, but he was as wily as he was sly and told the poor lass that the reason he was sneaking about the castle in women's garb was that he had fallen madly in love with her and wanted to be by her side. She believed the scoundrel and not only kept his secret identity, but helped feed him information on the Lady’s secret doings.

Time went by and the year was nearing an end. There was in fact five days left until Lady Avalon must announce her decision. The fifth suitor was once again up to his dastardly espionage, peeping into the Lady’s chambers. This time he witnessed her fashioning a little wax man again. This time however she did not feed it bread and wine, but instead took it by the neck and held it under the water saying “sir Dicken, Sir Dicken, your day is done, you shall drown in the waters one”. The next Day Sir Dicken did indeed drown. Intense as this discovery was, Simon did not think to warn the other suitors, or confront the Lady Avalon, but instead watched for the next three nights, as she knocked off all his competition. When the day came where it was his turn to be fashioned into a little wax poppet, he ran to the King, revealed her to the court as a witch and she was burned to death for her crimes. It would have been much simpler for all if they had just let her be a spinster!
